Health Corner: Stay healthy with 5-2-1-0 curriculum

Local family physician Dr. Amy Dawson, an FWCS parent and member of the FWCS School Health Advisory Committee, has been promoting something known as the 5-2-1-0 curriculum to help families with young children stay healthy.

The concept is simple enough:

  • 5 servings of vegetables or fruit increases fiber and antioxidant intake
  • 2 hours or less of leisure screen time allows more time for activity
  • 1 hour of daily activity maintains muscle mass
  • 0 sweetened beverages can lower calorie intake

While the website is based in Oregon, you could use it as a fun way to help yourself and the kids stay healthy this summer.

The FWCS School Health Advisory Committee consists of school personnel, administrators, parents and community partners interested in health. It meets four to five times a year with a mission to be a collaborative meeting of stakeholders where health topics relevant to student academic success and overall well-being can be discussed and managed.

The committee’s vision is that FWCS students will attend school with physical, mental and emotional needs met so they are fully engaged and ready to learn.
