Career Academy Students Participate in Signing Days

Preparing students for life after high school doesn’t just mean getting them ready for college. For many students, it means being prepared to enter the workforce after graduation.

In January, nearly 20 students signed on with local companies to earn valuable work experience before they leave high school. Signing days - a longtime tradition for student athletes heading to college - are now being used by the FWCS Career Academy and local businesses to promote students entering either paid or unpaid internships.

"This is a valuable experience and opportunity for our students moving forward," said FWCS Career Academy Principal Jesse Webb.

After returning from winter break, five students completing the FWCS Career Academy Automotive Program participated in a signing day at Tom Kelley Buick GMC. A few days later, 13 students studying Graphic Design, Information Technology and Welding programs were celebrated as they signed with the following companies: 3R Interactive, Advanced Cutting Systems, Ash Brokerage, Fort Wayne Community Schools, Give Hear, Quikcut, Region 8 ESC, SDI and Sweetwater.

The students were chosen for the internships for the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom, as well as their ability to complete the application and interview process.

The internship program is just one of the opportunities students have at the FWCS Career Academy. Job shadowing and cooperative education opportunities are also embedded into the programs. It is the goal of the Career Academy to become a talent pipeline and provide students with opportunities to gain valuable experience working with community partners.
