Washington Students Learning Through Opera

Washington Elementary first-graders have been getting their language arts lessons using song. Thanks to support from Washington’s partner, Fort Wayne Rotary, Heartland Sings has brought its Arts Integrated Residency to the elementary school.

Twice a week, Heartland Sings’ Stephanie Carlson and Jerome Sibulo work with the first-graders to explore language arts through the world of opera. They also focus on teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, creative thinking, critical thinking and perseverance.

The residency allows for collaboration between vocal artists from the non-profit vocal music company, teachers and school administrators. Adams Elementary has also participated in the program last year and this year.

Both schools will write and perform their own operas by the end of the school year using the language arts and other skills they have learned throughout the year.

"This is not an opportunity many first-grade students get," Teacher Monica Taylor said. "Kids love the music. They are acting. They are doing the dances. And they make connections to other class work."
