FWCS Homeless Assistance Program Kicks Off School Year
Fort Wayne Community Schools’ Homeless Assistance Program will kick off the 2015-16 school year with a Back to School Celebration from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Anthis Center, 1200 S. Barr St.
Families are invited to the event to get ready for the new school year, which begins Tuesday, Aug. 11. Students can receive free book bags, school supplies, hygiene products, shoes and haircuts. In addition, lunch will be provided at no cost during the event.
The celebration is sponsored by Parkview Hospital, NIPSCO, Smokey Bones, Sweetwater Sound, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Salvation Army, Feed the Children, Hope & Comfort, Sonrise Church, Optimistic’s Enterprise, Business & Professional Women’s Club, King’s Barber Shop, Inez Pierre-Louis, A Party Apart and other community organizations.
“We appreciate the support of all of our partners to help our families get off to a great start for the 2015-16 school year,” said Jessica Crozier, FWCS Homeless Liaison Coordinator. “It means so much to families to start the school year without having to worry about whether their children will have the tools they need to succeed.”
Each year, Fort Wayne Community Schools assists hundreds of homeless students and their families in an effort to maintain school as a stable environment during times of transition. FWCS assists with clothing, transportation and other support as needed.
