Neighborhood, Parents Invited to Center for Academic Success
The new Center for Academic Success at Nebraska will be open to Nebraska Neighborhood residents and families of students attending the Center from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.
The Center for Academic Success at Nebraska opened last month in the former Nebraska Elementary School building at 1525 Boone St. The building now houses an alternative program for students in grades 6-10. Students in grades 11 and 12 needing an alternative program attend the Center for Academic Success at the Bill C. Anthis Center.
“This program is designed to give students a second chance,” Principal Elizabeth Bryan said. “We want students to recognize they have the ability and opportunity to succeed regardless of decisions they have made in the past.”
When Nebraska Elementary was closed in 2016 because of declining enrollment, Fort Wayne Community Schools made a commitment to maintaining the building as an anchor in the community. Over the last year, the building underwent a $3.2 million renovation to transform it from an aging elementary school to a modern space for secondary students.
“We are excited to be a part of the historic Nebraska Neighborhood,” Bryan said. “Already, students have been working to beautify the campus with bushes and flowers. We look forward to finding ways to partner with the Nebraska Neighborhood Association to benefit both the students and residents.”
