Updated Academic Standards in English/Language Arts released
The following release is from the Indiana Department of Education: On March 22, Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed announced the posting of the Department of Education's UPDATED Academic Standards in English/Language Arts for public review and comment. The standards are refined at least every six years, the year before textbook adoption occurs in a particular subject area. In addition, NEW High School Literature, Composition, and Speech Standards and NEW High School Journalism Standards are posted and ready for review and comment. In Indiana, we believe our standards should be the very best in the nation, said Dr. Reed. Feedback from the public helps us make sure we get the standards just right . . . right for our students, educators, and citizens. Making sure we do a good job helps us to ensure a quality K - 12 education for all of our students. Just last year, Indiana's academic standards in mathematics and English/language arts were named most improved in the country by the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation in its report The State of State Standards 2005: Math and English. Indiana was one of only three states along with California and Massachusetts - to achieve A grades in both subjects. The recognition was a reflection of literally thousands of Hoosiers/educators, business people, parents, and citizens hard work and thoughtful thinking about what it is Indiana schoolchildren need to know and be able to do. Now it's time to re-examine our efforts and make them better still. Please take the time to comment on the UPDATED standards and NEW high school course standards.
