Fort Wayne Community Schools will again provide free, nutritious lunches to children ages 1 through 18 in city parks and schools weekdays beginning June 11. The program is funded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to ensure children receive proper nutrition throughout the year. FWCS has offered this service for nearly 20 years and expects to serve up to 100,000 meals this summer. Each lunch is an individually packaged, well-rounded meal that meets USDA nutritional standards. Meals often include a sandwich, a vegetable, fruit, snack and milk. There are a lot of children out there who don't have the opportunity to eat a meal if we're not there, says Lynne Peterman, Supervisor of the Nutrition Center. Unfortunately, many days we know the last meal they had was the one we served. FWCS prepares the food and administers the program to ensure it meets government requirements for reimbursement. These rules include the stipulation that the lunches be consumed on site and are provided for children only. No weekend meals are served and no meals will be available July 4. The meals will be provided without regard to race, color, national origin, gender or handicap. Questions should be directed to Lynne Peterman, Supervisor Nutrition Center at 4672500.
