FWCS sixth-graders get a taste of middle school
This year's sixth-graders will get their first real middle school experience Thursday, Aug. 9, when they visit their new schools for a day of exploring, socializing and learning. This is the first year all 10 Fort Wayne Community Schools middle schools are having Transition Days for the new middle school students. From 8 a.m. to noon, students will learn the rules of the school, find their lockers, walk through their schedules and practice their lunch routines. They will also get a taste of what their classes will be like by visiting math, language arts, computer, art and physical education work stations. The day is intended to help students prepare for the move from elementary to middle school, one of the major transitions in their educational careers. It is an exciting change, but it can also be a time of adjustment. Offering students a chance to see what their new schedules will be like and giving them a chance to experience middle school life before the school year begins is designed to ease the anxieties some students may feel. The sixth-grade visitation day also gives students a chance to meet their teachers and begin developing relationships with those they will work closely with during the 2007-08 school year. FWCS stresses building relationships with each student to help them be more successful. The first day of school for FWCS students is Aug. 20.
