Washington Center Elementary School second-grade teacher Sandra Nallenweg was named Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year for the area Friday, Nov. 7. Mrs. Nallenweg was surprised with the honor at an all-school assembly. She has been working at Washington Center since 2005 and was nominated for the Wal-Mart award by a former student. She will receive a $100 gift certificate to purchase materials for her class, and Washington Center will receive a $1,000 grant to spend as Mrs. Nallenweg desires. Mrs. Nallenweg is now eligible to apply to become Wal-Mart's state teacher of the year, which comes with a $10,000 grant for the school. In September, Miami Middle School English teacher Doug Koerner received a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award. He is also eligible for the statewide award.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana.
