To ensure a smooth application process, please have the following information ready when you begin your application:

  • Basic Personal Information (address, contact information, etc.)
  • Detailed Past Work History (including positions, dates of employment, etc.)
  • Professional References (with valid email addresses)
  • Current Resume (if you do not have a resume, Google “free resume builder” for a variety of available tools to easily generate one based on your work history)

Benefit plans for FWCS staff vary by employee group, full time status, and work schedule.

As a general rule, full time employees (those working 8 hours per day for the school year or entire calendar year) receive benefit packages including health/vision/dental insurance, paid time off, Indiana Public Retirement System pension, basic term life insurance, and access to various optional insurance benefits.

Part time employees typically are not offered health/vision/dental insurance, but do have access to a more limited benefit package depending on the number of hours worked each week. Substitutes do not receive benefits.

As one of the largest employers in Fort Wayne, FWCS is actively hiring throughout the calendar year. However, most of our hiring for school-based positions (teachers, instructional assistants, etc.) occurs during the months of April through September.

The highest need positions currently include:

  • Special Education Teachers
  • Special Education Assistants
  • Bus Drivers
  • Substitute Teachers and Substitute School Assistants
  • Bus Assistant
  • Cafeteria Assistants

Once a candidate has been offered a position by a hiring manager following the interview/selection process, that candidate works with the Human Resources Department to complete the pre-employment requirements. These requirements include background checks, reference checks, completion of required forms, work eligibility authorization, drug screen, receipt of required credentials, etc.

FWCS takes pride in our strict adherence to federal and state laws, district policies, and industry best practices to ensure we are only hiring the highest quality candidates to serve our students and families.

Applicants can move through the pre-employment process in as little as one or two business days, but that is only if that applicant is efficient in responding to requests for information and in completing the required steps provided by the Human Resources Department. The pre-employment process requires active, attentive participation from both the applicant and FWCS.

Due to the high volume of new hires during our peak hiring season (June through August), it does occasionally take longer to process new hires during those months. We appreciate your patience during that high-volume period.

It depends. Fort Wayne Community Schools adheres to all applicable federal and state laws regarding limitations on school employees due to past/current criminal history.

Any individual with currently pending criminal charges is not permitted to be hired by FWCS.

If you wish to inquire about your eligibility based on your specific criminal history, please contact the Talent Acquisition Team at talentacquisition@fwcs.k12.in.us for guidance.

First, you will want to make sure your application is as complete as possible to ensure it is not flagged for follow up. Please make sure you have provided as much detail as possible for your employment history and that you have an accurate, up-to-date resume attached. Please also regularly check your email (including spam/junk/clutter folders) to ensure you do not miss any potential contacts from the Human Resources Department.

Due to the high volume of applications received and the decentralized nature of our selection/interview process, you may not hear back regarding every position of interest. If you are selected for an interview, you will be emailed or called by the applicable school or department. If you are not selected for an interview and the position is filled with another applicant, you will eventually receive an email notification updating you about the position being filled.

Some positions can be highly competitive, so we encourage active job seekers to apply to any and all positions of interest to maximize your chances of being offered an interview.

Finally, if you have applied to a position but the hiring manager for that role is unable to view your application, please contact the Talent Acquisition Team at talentacquisition@fwcs.k12.in.us for guidance.

If in doubt about how to properly complete your application, please contact the Talent Acquisition Team at talentacquisition@fwcs.k12.in.us for guidance.

If you are a recent graduate who has not yet completed your initial licensing process, please indicate in your application, resume, and cover letter that your license is pending. This will ensure that principals understand you will be eligible for a teaching position once the licensing processes are finalized.

If you are currently pursuing an alternative licensure path, such as transition to teaching, please be sure to note a pending license in your application, resume, and cover letter. Please also highlight which alternative pathway you are using to become licensed.
