The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees approved on Monday, Dec. 12, transferring title of the former Pleasant Center Elementary School property to the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority. Indiana law allows the transfer of surplus school property to another governmental entity upon mutual agreement. After Pleasant Center closed as an elementary school in June 2010, the Airport Authority contacted FWCS about obtaining the property as it is within the Airport's master plan and its economic development corridor. FWCS and the Airport Authority have been working on a transfer since November 2010. The Airport Authority Board is expected to approve an identical resolution at its meeting on Dec. 19. With the Airport Authority's approval of the resolution, the Airport Authority will immediately have full ownership and control of the property. "Closing a school is never easy, but we are pleased that the Pleasant Center property will continue to be a site serving the best interests of the community," FWCS Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. "This transfer demonstrates a partnership between FWCS, the Airport Authority and the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance in support of economic development along the Bluffton corridor."

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
