Students and their families will have an opportunity to learn more about college and local employers at the College GO! Night at Northrop High School on Feb. 15. Northrop's PTSA is hosting the event after receiving a Take Your Family to School Week grant from the National PTA. Northrop is one of just two high schools in the country to win a National PTA grant to put on such an event. The event is open to all middle and high school students and their families. At least 13 colleges and universities as well as several local businesses and community organizations will have information and representatives available from 6-8:30 p.m. at Northrop. In addition to the information booths, there will also be Parent Roundtables at 6:30, 6:55 and 7:20 p.m. where parents can get additional information on topics, including Indiana's participation in the national Common Core Standards, 21st Century Scholars, preparing for college financially and academically, getting involved in PTA, Project Lead the Way, preparing for the SAT and ACT and more. Those attending the event can enter to win a Kindle Fire donated by ITT Exelis and other prizes. With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
