Four FWCS schools participate in CANstruction
Four Fort Wayne Community Schools competed in the Community Harvest Food Bank CANstruction event from April 21 to April 29 at Glenbrook Square Mall.
Participating schools were New Tech Academy with “The Roaring Tummies;” North Side High School with “Stuck Like Glue to End World Hunger;” Northrop High School with “Northrop Diner;” and Towles Intermediate with “The Sensational Sixties.”
The students and their advisors and mentors spent the day setting up on Friday, April 20. Judging took place on April 21 and then, the community was invited to vote on their favorite structure by either bringing canned goods to put in the bin next to that structure, or by donating ($1 per vote, 50 for $40) online.
The New Tech team’s display featured a scene from the Cotton Club in the 1920s; North Side’s team featured a glue bottle and other items from the 1940s; and Northrop’s team featured the 1950s with a diner scene.
Winners are expected to be announced later this week.
Last year, Towles New Tech’s CANstruction Club and Engineering Class won the 2017 People’s Choice Award, and photos of their structure (Fort Wayne Famous, which featured popular Fort Wayne landmarks) was submitted in the International CANstruction competition, where it competed against teams of mostly adult participants.
This year, the Towles team design included President John F. Kennedy and Civil Right leader Martin Luther King Jr. and the Beatles Abbey Road album cover on the outside, and highlights of the Apollo 11 space mission.
Fort Wayne CANstruction is in its 11th year of competition, annually raising over 85,000 pounds canned and non-perishable food items. Towles New Tech will be competing for the fifth year in a row. Over the years of participation in the CANstruction competition, Towles has donated over 50,000 pounds of food to the Community Harvest Food Bank.
